First Day in Delta College Essay
January, 14th 2014, was my first day at Delta College. I have heard some say that their first day of college was full of excitement, but for me it was completely new experience. My first day in Delta College was a memorable experience due to three reasons: I was exposed to the new environment, I met new teachers, and I met some new friends. On the first day of college, I saw the new environment and it made me feel more and more comfortable. At my first glimpse of my new campus, the air smelled new, the faces looked new and the environment seemed so different from Cambodia (my country) that it took away my anxieties. As my new friends, Theara, Sok, Samdy, and I roamed around, visiting every Delta College building, following the map. We saw awesome facilities support by high technology in the auto shop and we didnââ¬â¢t even know what it was called. All I know about it was that some of these machines were used it to fix cars. It was my first time seeing those amazing technologies. I t might sound that it was just ignorance in my new world, but it just really seemed new to me. These great experiences in the new environment helped me to adjust to Delta College as well. My first teacher for my English 84 class was named Becerra-Qu, and my second teacher for my Precalculus I class was named Tripp, R. At first they seemed so serious, but it was just the way their teaching styles were, which I found very helpful with my education. Then later on, my new friend told me that both teachers were nice people, but they just wanted their students to take their classes seriously. My friend also said, ââ¬Å"They look serious and mean but they also make joke around and make the students felt more comfortable to study in their classroom.â⬠She told me that ââ¬Å"Every teacher has his or her own ways to teaching because some students tend to not to pay attention to their teachers if they donââ¬â¢t set up their rules in his or her classroom.â⬠My first day of college was kind of scary but after my friend told me some stories about the teacher, it made me feel better. On my first day in Delta College, I made a couple new friendsââ¬â¢ named Theara, Sok, Sam, Samdy, Vuth and I found them worth having. At the start, all of those new faces made me feel uncomfortable because they were looking at me as if I were an interesting creature that they had never seen before. My first hour at Delta College made me feel lonely and miserable. During the first hour, I realized that I missed the majority of my old friends in my country, whether they were nice or rude to me. On my first day in Delta College, I remembered all of those good old days with my good old friends and all the good old memories that I spent with them in Cambodia. However, things went back to normal as if I had returned to my old life after I had my first English 84 classes at 8:30 in the morning. English 84 class was nice and I met some new classmates there, named Theara, Sok, Sam, Samdy, and Vuth. We all spoke Khmer, and they all came from the same country as I did; however, we all came from different provinces. Some of my new classmates that I met on my first day of school have been friends of mine since that first day. Most importantly, as I was Cambodian, I had a hard time to read, to write, and to listen to my classmates including the teacher. Most of students that studied in English 84 with me didnââ¬â¢t speak English in a correct way. So, on my first day in my English 84 class, I always spoke broken English. When my first English 84 class was over at 10:30, I started to walk down to Shima building and stopped to ask someone I met for directions to my math class. I actually arrived to the class late because I got lost in the Shima building. In addition, when I got to my Math class fifteen minutes late, it was terrible and I didnââ¬â¢t get what the teacher said at first because he was speaking too fast for me, so I just found my own seat and settled down in the Math class for one hour and a half. It was a big challenge for me to go to college because I came from another country, but it gave me a memorable experience that I will never forget. Overall, I believe that the first day of College was an exciting journey because of all the new things that we had been through and experienced. For me, my first day in Delta College turned out to be terrible experience that I had never expected, but was a step that boosted my interesting and also myà confidence.

Automobile â⬠Stereotypes Essay
ââ¬ËStereotypes Of Mechanicsââ¬â¢ There are many different stereotypes when it comes to taking your vehicle to a mechanic, whether it is one in your town our out. The stereotypes of mechanics will always be there. There are a lot of things that people label mechanics unjustly for such as, they tend to believe that we as mechanicsââ¬â¢ are all stupid and un-educated, that we all are grease monkeys and we want nothing more than to rip them off. That we waste time and our prices are unfairly marked. It seems to me that the most important stereotype that gets me is when they have a tendency to think that if one mechanic did a ââ¬Ëshadyââ¬â¢ or other words un-reliable job, that that is how all mechanics are. That how in some significant way seem to think that somehow their age, religion, gender, race, and or attitude play a role in the way there vehicle is handled and serviced. I can remember a certain circumstance that happened to me in my life; it was a cold day in December 2007 at my friendsââ¬â¢ garage, where I moonlight on the weekends. We had been working on a 1996 Toyota corolla when, a large man pulled up in his navigator. He had stated that it had been over heating, and wanted us to take a look at it. I told him it would be a few hours to leave it there because we already had a car that needed to be finished first. Well he didnââ¬â¢t like that, he had got mad and said: that all you mechanics are just a fucking like you rather work on that piece of shit corolla then my navigator. I had told him I am sorry he felt that way, but we do not discriminate from one customerââ¬â¢s car to the next, that they are all the same. He said well where I am from they would have done mine for me now; I wouldnââ¬â¢t had to have waited like this. That it must be are dumb redneck education and location, is why we where not smart enough to do his first, that it must be the way we where raised. So I told him that he was more then welcome to wait, if not he can take it somewhere else, he was a little upset and left. The funny thing was it was not more then an hour, when I heard a car pull up. I looked out and there was that man standing out in the driveway with my boss. They walked in; the boss had called me to his office and, said have you met my brother? I looked puzzled, he said I wanted to tell you thank you for the work you do and, wanted to test you guys to make sure you are all treating the customersââ¬â¢ right. Sorry I had to do this way but, hey you guys did well. So the stereotypesââ¬â¢ will always and, forever be there. You just have to remember that you must keep a level head, not get sucked in to stereotyping someone else. Always remember, hey when there talking about me they are just human and, when there talking about me there leaving someone else alone, even if just for a few moments.

Analysis of Saudi Arabian Water Resources Research Paper
Analysis of Saudi Arabian Water Resources - Research Paper Example This essay stresses that quality of water services in the country continues to be a real course of concern. To be a bit more specific discontinuation of services is a major problem. Very few cities actually enjoy continued services. According a survey conducted by FAO in Riyadh, in the last year water was available only once in every two and a half days. In Jeddah the water availability figure is once in every nine days. However, there has been slight improvement as in 2008n the concerned figure in Jeddah was and Riyadh was respectively 23 and 5 days. This paper makes a conclusion that that it is quite likely that demand and supply of water in various sector would be a major issue for a country like Saudi Arabia considering fact that it is desert country. The course of concern would be leading to a whole new level due to the changes in climate leading to rise in temperature, low amount of precipitation, increase in population and industrialization. Also consistency in the level of water supply is something that needs to be taken care of. Although there are a lot of room for improvement, but still the government initiatives in the domain of water demand management has to be appreciated. The plan undertaken by the government for the development of the industrial city would go a long way in the overall control of water demand and supply. Based on the above analysis some recommendations have been provided.

Spinal immobilization Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Spinal immobilization - Research Paper Example This is because of lack of effective measure to ascertain the degree and site of spinal injury at the time of presentation in any emergency setting. Also, the definition of the definite position of spinal immobilization is poor and lacking. Jin et al (2007) conducted a retrospective study to examine the sensitivity of the prehospital immobilization protocol in which age criterion is present to 5 criteria of spine clearance. The five criteria include decreased awareness, presence of intoxication, neurological deficit, pain on palpation of the spine and age criterion; which is 65 years or older. According to the protocol, standard full immobilization would be done to individuals with more than one criteria. This study included 238 victims of blunt trauma; of which 236 has atleast one positive criteria, suggesting 99.2 percent sensitivity. Of the 2 patients who did not receive immobilization, one had a small fissure in the arch of C2 and the other had fracture of the transverse process of L3. Both of them were discharged on the next day without any medical interventions or complications. Based on these results, the researchers concluded that spinal immobilization protocol must be based on clinical criteria rather than on mechanism of trauma. They also recommended a prospective study to confirm such findings. The effectiveness and benefits of immobilization of the spine depends on the perfection in application of the immobilization technique. Peery et al (2007) conducted a study to assess and examine the quality of long spine board spinal immobilization in patients presenting to the emergency room via emergency medical service. During examination, evaluation of the location and number of the restraining straps and also their degree of tightness was done. 50 patients were included in the study. 30 percent of these had atleast one unattached tape to attach head to the board. Also, 88 percent had more than 2 cm slack between the body. This study draws evidence that im mobilization is not done well in emergency medical service and better measures and protocols need to be drawn for improved immobilization. Thus, even though spinal immobilization may provide genuine benefits, they be lost due to poor application. Generally, immobilization of spine consists of a cervical collar that supports either side of the head, and the long and short back boards which have straps attached to them to immobilize the rest of the body. With regard to the boards, there is lot of controversy whether long boards are superior to short boards. According to Cline (1985; cited in AANS, 2001 ), short boards are superior to cervical collar alone. Mozalewski (cited in AANS, 2001 ) opined that unless the motion of trunk also was minimized along with motion of head, spine immobilization was ineffective. The literature review by AANS (2001) drew some implications about spine immobilization practices in an emergency setting. The review opines that studies pertaining to spinal imm obilization are limited because none of the studies actually evaluate the full range of available devices. However, from whatever results are available, it appears that a combination of cervical collar immobilization with supportive straps on a rigid long spinal backboard to secure the whole body including the trunk is superior to cervi

Slave trade and the black race Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Slave trade and the black race - Essay Example With the markets of slaves being on high demand in the African continent, the methods of capturing the same slaves intensified to an extent whereby the children were enticed with sweets so as they can add up to the list of slaves. The children were visualized as persons who would carry out simple chores, for instance, cleaning the houses of the masters. In line to this argument, it is evident that the extent to which the blacks were demoralized to the trade is simply unspeakable. This can simply be discussed as an inhuman activity, that could have kept the escalating trend were it not for the intervention of the humanitarians and economist who argued against the entire concept of the slave trade. Regarding a human being as an object, and enslaving the same to a later supply in the market signifies the extent to which the Blacks were visualized. On another angle, other analysts and researchers in Black history argue that slave trade is one of the appalling crimes that have taken place in the history of the Blacks. The extent to which the Blacks experienced horror and undermine from the whites is astonishing. Diouf questions the reasons behind the continuity of the vice for a very long time and on such great extent (xiv). Additionally, questions why the same did not happen in other parts of the world, especially the new world, and why the horror had to demoralize the lives of poor Africans have always lingered in the minds of historians.

Inoperability Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Inoperability - Research Paper Example (2010). All these applications applied individually will support communications through interfaces which demand for constant maintenance and modification due to their dynamism. This as one way of attaining operability has not proved worthwhile. Similarly, there is standardization of an interface can as well be employed in attaining operability since this method eliminates the extra cost which would be incurred when building separate interfaces. The second approach is fuel by the fact that application developers are able to construct applications that are in line with the standardized interfaces, this increases the prospects of interoperability hence reducing cost which also includes reduced maintenance costs since there is a drop in the number of the interfaces to be accorded maintenance. The health level seven (HL7) is an application protocol for exchange of data in the healthcare environment. It is developed to be used to transfer data of healthcare information from department or f unction to the other basing its applications on the vast concept of application to application exchange of message system. The HL7 is the unit in form of an atom that passes data through systems. Or instance, the HL7 facilitates the admission of patience to a hospital or giving a lab order for blood test (Au, S, 2003). Every world real world event is defined by HL7 through an abstract messaging system which is comprised of a group of segments in a defined criterion and the rules and regulations for the construction of such abstract is created by the HL7 developed message framework which comprises of elements which are the building blocks and follows a hierarchy in context. Individually, the elements are associated by the factors like option ability, value set, length and data form that gives a constraint to them. The other components such as segments and segment groups are likely to compose additional elements while sub-components are purely primitive in nature since they are in the position of holding a data value without having a descendant structure Electronic Healthcare Information Security. (2010). HL7 was not there in the past but in the onset of its development, it was basically formed to give room too many dynamic business procedures that face the healthcare industry. However, the wider forms resulted into standardization which in turn created so many optional parts hence the alignment of the implementation of interfaces proved futile. HL7 applications are normally joined in two ways that is point to point or through the middleware which is clearly shown by the interface engine outcomes. Point-to- point applications entails the connection of each pair of applications in an independent way while the middle way application is the process where all the applications are connected centrally to the message broker. The operating system interconnection separates the functions of the protocols into five main layers with every layer having only a function of the layer that is found below it. This is the protocol stack and it is used for implementation in the software or hardware with the lower layers in the hardware and the higher in the software Data Exchange Standards, Health Level Seven Version 2.5 an application protocol for electronic data exchange in healthcare environments. Rights Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Rights - Essay Example He was against the concept of looking elsewhere for powers or remedies that know no concrete existence in the world. He believed in the power of the self, and advocated the views that man was ultimately powerful within his own domains. Marx believed, "Man makes religion, religion does not make man" (1844). And subsequently followed his concepts wherein he concluded that man is not an abstract entity, but the purpose of creation himself. All answers are only to be found within the visible means available, which are predominantly all available within the society. Hence he came to the notion that society was the one thing that empowered man, as it entailed all its norms, ideals and resolutions. With the infamous saying, "[Religion] is the opium of the people" (Marx, 1844), he generated the idea that collective goals and solutions are within the reach of man and society themselves; they should be accessed at any other level. Intangibles, and subjective reality were a hoax in his perception, and he declared that a thinking collective force was the ideal way out. Marx searched relentlessly for the truth, and put the responsibility upon the shoulders of history to come up with a plausible answer.

Analytical Paper Assignment (Syria and Ukraine) Essay
Analytical Paper Assignment (Syria and Ukraine) - Essay Example This paper discloses the current conflicts in Syria and Ukraine. It describes the roles of the main leading countries in these conflicts. The past events in Syria and Ukraine prove that imperialism is no longer relevant. It is no longer easier for powerful countries to increase their power by exercising control over the rest of the world. America, for instance, prefers not to intervene in the military actions of Syria mainly because they want to maintain a neutral stance, and projects a good international policy of not meddling in the affairs of other nations. The American foreign policy is such that it justifies military action if there is substantial evidence that the countries such as Syria and Ukraine pose a threat to world security. The Ukrainian geopolitical realities are quite different, indicating likely risks of cold war. There is also likelihood of power rivalry. The international law viewpoint considers Syria and Ukraine as trying to make an ambiguous case in trying to declare their sovereignty, the west thinks, yet there is a legal act that that has is valid from 60 years ago (Kristof 27). The self-determination remains inapplicable because its exercise would fragment an existing state-Ukraine. The same nation was a member of United Nations. Such world orders are now challenged by such functional considerations as climate change, sustainability, and weapons of mass destruction-and by normative contemplation connected with equity, human rights and survival of species (Cooper p29).

Literature Review of The Use of Shame With Sexual Offences Essay
Literature Review of The Use of Shame With Sexual Offences - Essay Example Although Anne has taken an obvious standpoint in the beginning but she has presented the opposing arguments quite often in the article. The article is grounded into strong ethical boundaries and Anne has presented any personal details or hints. Public protection is the essence of any legislation either it is concerned with the pre-crime evasive measures or post-crime reclamation. The author has taken up a particular aspect of restorative justice, defined to be ââ¬Å"a way of dealing with criminal offences by involving the offender, the victim, and possible community representatives in an informal negotiating process which results in the offender's undertaking some 'reparative' task.â⬠(Hirsch et al. 2003). Anne give the brief overview of restorative justice and challenges it was facing. There critics of the restorative justice were asking for inflicting penalizations and penalties for the committers of sexual harassment and sexual offenders. They hold the point that this restor ative justice does not have much to tackle the culprit and offers no good to society in the long run. Deflem has observed this in his article, ââ¬Å"policies designed to treat and rehabilitate offenders had an unacceptably low success rate ââ¬â especially when evaluated in the light of the very science which produced those policies ââ¬â the discretion given to judges to fit sentences to the offender and not exclusively the offense seemed misplaced.â⬠(Deflem, 2006). However, Anne defended his stance for use of shame as an instrument for restorative justice and criticized the current ââ¬Ëwhat worksââ¬â¢ approach of criminal justice policy and pointed out the lack of focus in legislation and implementation on sexual offences. Anne categorically claims that ââ¬Å"the traditional form of retributive justice does not seem to be working.â⬠It is not only Anne but a number of other experts have already advocated in favor of restorative justice and allied tools for ensured and improved effects and outcomes from it. The relationship between society and the offenderââ¬â¢s infliction is often overlooked by the theorists as Durkheim has argued, ââ¬Å"the function of punishment has less to do with the offender and more to do with a collective reaction of the community to the violation of its norms and an effort to re-establish solidarity around those norms.â⬠(Deflem, 2006). Sexual assault against children is considered to be the most offensive and heinous crime and the retributive justice despite sentencing the offender can not integrate the offender with the community which increases the chances of a second attempt by the offender. This disintegration of the offender, according to Anne is required to be change into integration with the community through restorative justice. Although it might be referred as a ââ¬Ëparadigm shiftââ¬â¢ but it has to be case if reintegration is a declared ultimate objective of the justice system. The re storative system has its own advantages that cannot be overlooked, Carrabine has argued for the same, ââ¬Å"the use of integrative shaming techniques, mediation and reparation aim to provide an alternative and more appropriate way of resolving disputes, confronting offenders with their wrong doing and empowering the victim.â⬠(Carrabine et al., 2009, p.174.). Anne has righteously pointed out the role of media in the success of the restorative justice and has not been helping the cause by calling it a ââ¬Ë
